Chesapeake Bay Life

Two chairs on a dock on the bay

Captain John Smith once said of the Chesapeake Bay region that, "Heaven and earth never agreed to frame a better place for man's habitation."  We have to agree with him. The Chesapeake Bay regions of Maryland and Virginia are, indeed, a beautiful place to live and an area many people now call home.

Retiring Here

There are many nice retirement communities in both the Maryland and Virginia portions of the Chesapeake Bay region.  Active retirees will enjoy proximity to the Bay for fishing and boating.  This region has lots of golf courses and other outdoor recreational opportunities too.  Check out our list of Chesapeake Bay area retirement communities.

Seafood

Yum! One of the many benefits of living close to the Chesapeake is that there is always lots of fresh seafood available.  You might do a little fishing and catch something yourself, maybe take a fishing charter in search of a record catch.

The Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab is known all over the world, and we have them right here in our own backyard.  If you've lived here for a while, you probably already have a preferred method of crabbing, but here are some crabbing tips if you need them.  And we've provided information on picking crabs ... and some excellent crabcake recipes too.

History

How much do you know about Chesapeake Bay history?  This region was one of the earliest parts of America settled by Europeans.  Captain John Smith of the Jamestown Settlement explored the area, but the Powhatan Indians were here long before that.

The Bay has a rich maritime history too, with several types of boats that are unique to this area.  The Chesapeake Bay Skipjack is a beautiful, but disappearing part of the Bay's history.

Man's Best Friend

The Chesapeake Bay even has it's own breed of dog, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever
