BayDreaming.com's Guide to the Chesapeake Bay

Crisfield, Maryland Attractions

Crisfield, in southern Somerset County, Maryland, is located at the mouth of the Little Annemessex River at Tangier Sound.  Crisfield's history is based in the seafood industry and the town features many excellent seafood restaurants.  Home to the annual National Hard Crab Derby, Crisfield is proud of its ties to the Chesapeake Bay.

Crisfield boasts one of the largest marinas on the East Coast, Somers Cove Marina, with 450 slips.  Charter and head boat fishing opportunities are plentiful.  On the waterfront at Somers Cove Marina, you can visit the Crisfield Historical Museum and Visitor's Center.  The Port of Crisfield Escorted Walking Tour begins at the museum and includes a visit to a crab and oyster processing plant where you can see skilled workers pick crabs and shuck oysters with lightening speed.

In addition to the annual Hard Crab Derby, Crisfield hosts many other annual festivals.  These annual events feature local seafood and are a great opportunity to visit this authentic Chesapeake Bay waterfront town.  Popular festivals include the Soft Shell Spring Fair, the J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake, and the Terrapin Sands Fish Fry.

Cruises to Tangier Island aboard the Steven Thomas depart daily (May 15 through October) from Crisfield.  The Steven Thomas departs from 1001 W. Main Street.  The ship departs from Crisfield at 12:30pm, arrives in Tangier at 1:45pm, departs Tangier at 4:00pm, and returns to Crisfield at 5:15pm.  Cruises to Smith Island, aboard the Capt. Tyler depart daily (Memorial Day to October 14) from Somers Cove Marina at 12:30pm.   You can also take a Chesapeake Bay cruise on the Captain Rudy Thomas.  This cruise takes you down the Chesapeake Bay, through the Naval ship yard, to Portsmouth, where you will stay overnight before returning to Crisfield the next day.  The Bay Cruise runs from May through October and leaves from Somer's Cove Marina on Tuesdays at 11:00am, returning on Wednesday at 6:30pm and on Saturdays at 11:00am, returning on Sunday at 6:30pm.

Nearby Janes Island State Park offers hiking, camping, picnicking, swimming, boating, and fishing.
