Baltimore’s big celebration to mark the 200th anniversary of our National Anthem.
Francis Scott Key wrote the words to the National Anthem after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore’s harbor. The words to the song Key composed, originally titled “Defence of Fort M’Henry,” were first published on September 20th 1814. Congress adopted the piece we know as “The Star-Spangled Banner” as our National Anthem in 1931.
The Star Spangled Spectacular celebration includes battle re-enactments, visits from tall ships and Navy vessels, an air show by the Blue Angels, festivals at Inner Harbor and Fort McHenry, and musical performances including a big concert at Pier Six Pavilion that will be followed by a fireworks display.
