Visiting North EastNorth East, Maryland is located at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, on the Northeast River, about 50 miles from Baltimore and Philadelphia. Northeast, settled prior to 1700 and incorporated in 1850, is rich in history. Main Street in downtown North East offers a selection of antique shops, stores, and restaurants. St. Mary Anne's Episcopal Church dates back to the 1700's and the adjacent cemetery is one of the oldest in Maryland. Where to stay? The North East Community Park is a nice place to enjoy a quite walk and scenic views. This 13 acre waterfront park offers walking paths, picnic tables, playgrounds, and restrooms. For more information on downtown attractions, the North East Chamber of Commerce website offers a nice interactive map of North East attractions and a downloadable "strolling guide." Hart's Amphitheater at Hart's United Methodist Church, hosts a series of concerts and events throughout the year. The Amphitheater is located next to the church, and has views of the Elk River. The Upper Bay Museum, located in the North East Community Park on the banks of the Northeast River, is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the commercial and recreational hunter and houses a large collection of hunting and fishing memorabilia. Open Wednesday through Sunday 12:00 noon to 4:00pm. The Day Basket Factory, located at 714 S. Main Street, in North East prides itself in making 100% white oak baskets with some of the same tools that were used when the factory was established in 1876. The factory is open for visitors, where you can see baskets being made and shop at the factory store. Elk Neck State Park is located 10 miles south of North East. Elk Neck State Park has 2,200 acres of lush waterfront forests, rustic cabins and campsites for tents, trailers, and motor homes. The park has 10 miles of hiking trails, a sandy beach, and miniature golf. Turkey Point Lighthouse, one of the Chesapeake Bay's oldest lighthouses in continuous operation, is also located within the park and is accessible from an easy 2 mile trail. Festivities begin at 5:00pm with food concessions, military uniform and memorabilia displays, concert by the Upper Chesapeake Community Band, flag ceremonies, concert by the Maryland National Guard Band, and fireworks at 9:15.
