Visiting Oxford

Oxford, Maryland, was officially founded in 1694, making it one of Maryland's oldest towns.

Oxford is located near the mouth of the Tred Avon River and served as an important port of entry for British trade vessels in Colonial times.  Oxford flourished in this capacity until the Revolutionary War brought an end to British trade. The town declined for many years until oystering businesses began to flourish in the late 1800's.

Today, Oxford is a quiet town that is enjoyed by visitors who appreciate it's history and charm.   In 2011, Yachting Magazine named Oxford the world's best waterfront town.

The Oxford-Bellevue Ferry is believed to be the oldest privately operated ferry in continuous service in the United States. The original ferry service was established in 1683.  The current ferry service makes the trip across the Tred Avon River to Bellevue, every 25 minutes.  The ferry runs from 7:00am to 9:00pm, M-F and 9:00am to 9:00pm Sat. & Sun. during the summer months and 7:00am to sunset M-F and 9:00am to sunset Sat. & Sun in March through November.  The ferry does not operate in December,  January, or February.  The approach to Oxford from the Bellevue side is very pretty and worth the trip.

Robert Morris Inn, Oxford MdOxford has a very nice town park on Morris Street.  The park has a beautiful view of the Tred Avon River.  There are picnic tables and swings overlooking the river.  A nice place to enjoy a picnic lunch.   You'll find sandwiches, ice cream, and more at the market and deli located across the street.

Across from the park, at 100 South Morris Street, you will find the Oxford Museum.  The museum hosts a collection of artifacts shared by local families, depicting the life of Oxford's people since the town's beginnings in the 1600's.

Items on display include old photographs, clothing, antique engines, boat building tools, models, paintings, furniture, documents, war items, Indian items, pottery, china, and waterman tools.  More information and museum hours

Book lovers will enjoy a visit to the Mystery Loves Company Booksellers, located at 202 S. Morris Street.  They're a full-service bookstore that specializes in mysteries, and also carries books about the Eastern Shore region.

The tiny Oxford Custom House, located next to the ferry terminal location, is an exact replica of a custom house that served Oxford during its Colonial past.  The Custom House is open weekends from April through late autumn.

The recently renovated Oxford Community Center is home to the Tred Avon Players, a non-profit theatre group that performs plays and musicals throughout the year.  The Community Center is located in a restored brick school house.  Visit the Tred Avon Players website for scheduling information.

Oxford is home has several marinas,  giving the visiting boater plenty of options.

The area roads are flat and fairly wide, making them excellent for cycling. You can rent a bike from Easton Cycle and Sport. They have kayak rentals too. View a map and trail descriptions for popular Talbot County bike routes, including an Oxford/St Michaels loop.

There are also several restaurants in town. The Oxford Business Association maintains a list of restaurants on their website -  Oxford Restaurants.  And, if you enjoy good ice cream, don't miss paying a visit to the Scottish Highland Creamery, were you'll find delicious freshly made ice cream in a wide variety of flavors. The creamery is located at 314 Tilghman Street,
