St. Mary's County is Maryland's oldest county, and features small towns and historic sites.  The British colonists made their first landing in Maryland at St. Clement's Island.  And, Historic St. Mary's City served as the state's colonial capital. 

 

St. Mary's County is bordered to the North by the Patuxent River, to the South by the Potomac, and to the east by the Chesapeake Bay.  Much of the area's recreational amenities are tied to these water bodies.

St. Mary's County Attractions

 

St. Mary's County, is a beautiful area of Maryland with historic sites, small towns, marinas, technology, sports, and more.

 

For history buffs, there's plenty to do and see.  St. Clement's Island State Park marks the location of the first landing of British Colonists in Maryland.  Historic St. Mary's City is a living history museum of Maryland's Colonial Capital, complete with 1676 State House, a woodland Indian hamlet, and a replica of the ship which brought Colonists to the area.  Or, you can visit, Sotterly Plantation, which sits on a beautiful riverfront location.  Tours of the Sotterly Plantation manor house are available.  Watch for annual events held on the plantation grounds.  Lighthouse fans can climb to the top of Piney Point Lighthouse at Point Lookout, where the mighty Potomac River joins the Chesapeake Bay. 

 

Leonardtown is Maryland's oldest incorporated town.  The town square offers dining and shopping at antique and specialty shops.  The Leonardtown town square is also the center of activity for many seasonal events.   

 

St. Mary's County has both Amish and Mennonite communities located in the Charlotte Hall, Mechanicsville, and Loveville areas.  Motorists should take care to watch for horse drawn buggies on the roads in these areas.  Amish and Mennonite produce and baked goods are sold at the north county farmers markets, including the Farmers Market and Auction at 30030 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD, which is a seven acre flea market with fresh produce and Amish goods (open year round, on Wed, Sat, and Sun) and the North St. Mary's County Farmers Market located in the parking lot of the Charlotte Hall Library, 37600 New Market Turner Rod, Charlotte Hall, MD, which is open mid April through October on Monday through Saturday and features produce, flowers, and Amish baked and canned goods.

 

 

Motor Sports fans will want to head out to Budds Creek, home of the Budds Creek Motocross and Speedway, Maryland International Raceway, and Potomac SpeedwayBudds Creek Morocross and Speedway serves up motocross racing throughout the year.  Events are held on most weekends.  Maryland International Raceway hosts weekly IHRA championship drag racing on most Saturdays, April through October.  Potomac Speedway is a 3/4 mile clay oval stock car racetrack for races featuring Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Socks, Hobby Stocks, and 4 cylinders.  Races at this track are every Saturday night at 7:00 from March to October.

 

The Lexington Park area of St. Mary's County is home to the Patuxent Naval Air Station (NAS Pax River), and several associated aerospace and high-tech companies.  This area has become a center for hotel and shopping center development to serve the businesses and employees in that area.

March 25 -- Maryland Day Celebrations at St. Clements Island.  St. Clements Island Museum, Coltons Point, off of Rt 242.  5:00pm.

 

April 20 -- Earth Day Celebration on the Square.  Washington Street, Leonardtown.  12:30 - 4:30pm.  Live music, entertainments, arts and crafts, face painting, environmental demonstrations, recycling information, plants, herbs, food and more. 

 

May 10 - 11 -- Piney Point Lighthouse Waterfront Festival.  Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Park.  Saturday 10:00am to 4:00pm and Sunday Noon to 4:00pm.  Maritime exhibits, demonstrations, children's activates, food and lighthouse tours. . 

 

May 16 -- Southern Maryland Quilt and Needlework Show.  Sotterly Plantation, Hollywood, Route 245.  10:00am to 4:00pm.  Judged quilt and needlework show, one of the region's most acclaimed. 

 

June 8 -- Annual St. Mary's Crab Festival.  Governmental Center Lawn, Leonardtown.  Noon to 6:00pm.  Local crab and seafood, music, classic cars, arts and crafts, and on-seafood items.  Email for more information.

June 14 -- Blue & Gray Days --  Point Lookout State Park, Scotland.  10:00am to 4:00pm.  Civil war living history demonstration of military and civilian life at Point Lookout during the war. 

 

June 14 -- Maritime Heritage Fest.  Historic St. Mary's City.  10:00am to 5:00pm.  Sailors and pirates, big and small boats, sea shanties, hands on activities and demonstrations.  Admission includes entry to the festival and all museum exhibits. 

 

June 21 -- Juneteenth Celebration in Freedom Park.  Route 235 & Tulagi Place, Lexington Park.  A celebration of freedom held at the African-American Monument.  Children's games, gospel and jazz music, vendors, and food. 

 

July 4 -- Freedom Fest.  St. Mary's County Fairgrounds, Leonardtown.  5:00pm to 10:30pm.  entertainment, exhibits, food and fireworks. 

 

July 12 -- Potomac Jazz & Seafood Festival.  St. Clement's Island Museum, Colton's Point.  4:00pm to 10:00pm.  Riverside venue offers three dynamic jazz groups and Southern Maryland seafood. 

 

July 19 -- Black Eyed Susan Day.  St. Clement's Island Museum.  Noon to 4:00pm.  Bring your camera and a picnic and enjoy over 4,000 black-eyed susans in bloom. 

 

August 2 -- Annual Governor's Cup Yacht Race.  St. Mary's City Waterfront.  One of sailing's Top 10 parties, with live music, food vendors and award ceremonies.  More information.

 

August 9 -- Beach Party on the Square.  Leonardtown.  Live music, sandy volleyball, moon bounce, face painting, food and fun. 

 

Saturdays and Sundays, Sept 6 - Nov. 2 -- Forrest Hall Farm Crazy Corn Maze.  1:00am to dusk.  Miles of trails and family fun in a corn maze.  Hayrides, pumpkin patch, farm animals, picnic area, and local produce.  More Information.

October 25 -- Fall Festival and Taste of St. Mary's.  Greenwell State Park, Hollywood.  Crafts, children's events, entertainment in a riverfront setting.  Admission per car.  Tasting tickets sold separately. 

 

November 11 -- Veterans Day Parade.  Washington Street, Leonardtown.  10:00am.  Marching bands, military units, bagpipers, Native American dancers, and classic cars.  A special wreath laying ceremony will be held in the Town Square immediately following the parade. 

 

November 28 -- Amish Quilt Auction.  Grove Farm Lane, Mechanicsville.  Off of Route 236/Thompson's Corner Road.   9:00 am to 5:00pm.  Bid on handmade Amish quilts and other hand stitched items at this traditional auction.  Crafts and food available. 

 

November 28 -- Christmas on the Square and Annual Tree Lighting.  Washington Street, Leonardtown.  5:00pm to 9:00pm.  Holiday entertainment, caroling, sleigh rides, carriage rides, hayrides, live nativity, petting zoo, Santa's Parade and the lighting of the Town Christmas Tree.
