Visiting the Kent Island Area

If you’ve crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, you’ve gone right by Kent Island.  Located off the western shoreline of Queen Anne’s County, Kent Island sits at the base of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, connecting Maryland’s eastern and western shores.  The island is just barely separated from the mainland by a narrow channel known as Kent Narrows.

Next time you’re crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, plan a stop in the Kent Island/Kent Narrows area.  Stretch your legs at a nature area or enjoy a meal are one of the many restaurants.  There are also lots of hotels here if you need a place to stay.

Water views and convenience to dining make this a popular overnight stop.

Popular hotels in the Kent Island area include the Hilton Garden Inn Kent Island and the Holiday Inn Express Kent Island. Or if you’re looking for something other than the typical chain hotel experience, consider a stay at the historic Kent Manor Inn (now known as the Kent Island Resort).

Kent Island has deep roots in Maryland history. Kent Fort, founded in 1631, is the third oldest English settlement in the country, after Jamestown and Plymouth. Before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge opened in 1952, the area served as a hub for steamboat travel, and ferry service traveled between Kent Island’s Love Point and the Western Shore.

Stevensville, Grasonville, and Centreville are towns on Kent Island and they’re the addresses you’ll see listed for most of the hotels.

Away from the hotels area, both Stevensville and Grasonville have nice historic districts.

Centreville is the county seat of Queen Anne’s County, and there’s a nice old courthouse building in town. It’s one of two Maryland courthouses that date back to the 18th century. The courthouse is located at 120 North Commerce Street in Centreville.

The area near the inlet between the island and the mainland is known as Kent Narrows. That’s where the biggest collection of restaurants are. It’s a nice place to have some seafood while you enjoy the view.
