This Chesapeake Bay cruising guide is updated annually and has become one of the standard references for cruising boaters in the Chesapeake Bay region. The guide includes all the navigation information you'll need to find your way around the Bay and it's many tributaries. And there's plenty of information on marinas, anchorages and things to do ashore - all the things you need to know in order to plan a weekend outing or an extended cruise.
Cruising the Chesapeake Bay, A Gunkholer's Guide. By William H. Shellenberger. This book is a favorite with Chesapeake Bay cruising boaters. Gunkholes are the creeks and coves located all over the Chesapeake Bay and it's tributaries. Getting up into these quieter fingers of the Bay are a big part of what makes Chesapeake Bay cruising fun.
"Were it only a navigational aid, the book would be worth owning, but its introductory chapters and sidebars lift it into the realm of good travel writing as well." - Mid-Atlantic Country.
A new edition of the Gunkholer's Guide was released in 2012. The new edition includes updates to the text and descriptions of the cruising guides (the book includes cruise itineraries for 3, 9, and 16 day cruises in the southern, central, and northern portions of the Bay). GPS data has been added for all anchorages and harbors. Navigation hazards and safety information has been updated. And there's a new listing of Chesapeake Bay marinas.

Chesapeake Bay Chartbooks
Maryland Cruising Guide 2012-2013 Virginia Cruising Guide 2012-2013
Although these two books from the Williams & Heintz Map Corporation call themselves cruising guides, "chart books" would be a better description. There's one book each to cover the Maryland the Virginia portions of the Chesapeake Bay. Each contains navigation charts created from the most up-to-date NOAA information. New books are published every two years. They're nice large format books printed on wet strength paper that is nearly as strong wet as it is dry. The books come in a heavy vinyl sleeve with a velcro closure to protect them from spray when not in use.
The maps contain information on bouys, water depth, tidal currents, marina and ramp locations, and channels. Each book contains an index to marinas, with locations, phone numbers, and ameninties. The books also include tide charts, a planning chart, towboats list, and a distance table.
