Solomons Island is a major boating center located at the mouth of the Patuxent River, in southern Calvert County, Maryland.

The island is about an hour and a half drive from Washington DC or two hours from Baltimore. As you approach the island, you'll cross the rather impressive looking Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge. The bridge is a tall one, reaching 135 feet. You'll get a nice view of Solomons as you cross.

Solomons is the home of the Calvert Marine Museum, a popular day trip destination, plus the Annmarie Garden Sculpture Park and the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. The town is also just a nice place to go enjoy some seafood and the waterfront setting - it's a very popular destination for cruising boaters.

If you follow the Riverwalk boardwalk along the Patuxent River, you can enjoy nice waterfront views and have access to many of the town's restaurants and shops. The Chesapeake Bay Biological Lab is located a little beyond the southern end of the boardwalk. Their welcome center is open to visitors Friday through Sunday. Check their website for hours.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from on the island, including the well-known Tiki Bar. Restaurant choices include the Back Creek Bistro (waterfront in Calvert Marina), Boomerang's Ribs (BBQ, burgers, seafood), the Captain's Table (casual waterfront dining), the CD Cafe (small restaurant with a varied menu), DiGiovanni's (Italian/Mediterranean Cuisine, waterfront), the Dry Dock Restaurant (seasonal cuisine, waterfront at Zahniser's Yachting Center), Isaac's Restaurant and Pub (located near Holiday Inn), Kim's Keylime Pies and Lotus Kitchen (sandwiches, soups, salads, and pies), Stoney's Solomons Pier (crab and seafood, waterfront view), Stoney's Kingfishers Seafood (waterfront seafood), the Laughing Buddha (Chinese food), and the Ruddy Duck Brewery & Grill (freshly brewed beer, casual dining, located next to the Hilton Garden Inn).
